Intimate Rut is an exhibition of paintings exploring identity through the lens of contemporary masculinity. In a general sense, these works are a response to the actions and behaviours seen in boys and young men growing up in the late 90’s, early 00’s. These works present some of the complicated modes of masculine construction, such as violence, embarrassment, and a masking of affect, among others. The concept of disruption is essential to these works, whether it be in the form of physical depictions in the composition, or in the materiality of the paint itself. Within these works is a sincere attempt at self-awareness, acting as a disruption toward the status quo. Fragility, isolation, and blunted affect are identified in these works as cornerstones of contemporary masculinity, as well as an inability to manage these emotions and states. The aim of these works is to critically reveal and name these behaviours.
